Reward and Recognition Programs: Beyond the Cash Bonus

Reward and recognition programs can be a very important element of the total compensation program in any company. Whereas wages are what people earn for doing the job they were hired to do, recognition celebrates an effort beyond the call of duty and reward acknowledges reaching a goal.

The goal of any program is to make people who work for your company feel important. In theory, if the company honors and serves the employee, the employee will honor and serve the company.

Match the Reward to the Person

There are several guidelines for effectively rewarding and recognizing employees. One is to match the reward to the person. Start with the individual’s personal preferences. Find out what makes each of your employees tick. Rewards may be personal or official, informal or formal, public or private, and may take the shape of gifts or activities. How about a night out at the ball game, a fishing trip or a handsomely engraved plaque.

Be sure to be specific about the reason for the recognition or reward. And make sure that it is given in a timely manner.

To be effective, programs should reflect the company’s values and business strategy. If your company is more concerned about quality craftsmanship than quick performance, an incentive tied to beating job hours probably won’t be as effective as one tied to exceptional craftsmanship.

If possible, employees should participate in the development and execution of the program. In that way, they will buy into the program.

Avoid using blanket approaches to motivation. Giving the same reward to every member of the organization does not inspire employees to excel and may actually damage performance. Top achievers may see no acknowledgement of the exceptional job they have done and no reason to continue excelling.

A thoughtful and personal reward or recognition program that shows true appreciation for a job well done can motivate your employees to perform at even higher levels.

Stocks ended a choppy session sharply lower Tuesday as investors regrouped after the prior session’s blockbuster rally.

Pasar mengambil profit kemarin setelah Senin kemarin naik tajam. Mereka mengambil kesempatan sambil melihat berikutnya apa yang akan terjadi.

IHSG hari ini harus waspada, karena besok adalah hari libur Nasional, pelaku bisa keluar sejenak dari pasar dengan alasan libur ini.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped 115.65, or 1.5 percent, to close at 7,660.21. The S&P 500 shed 2 percent and the Nasdaq lost a whopping 2.5 percent.

Investors who believe in this week’s stock rally are digging through the market to find creative places to put their money.

While much of Wall Street focuses on the trend in banks and how they’re affected by the latest Washington policy moves, others are looking for opportunities in places like home builders and biopharma.

There’s also a school of thought that mergers and acquisitions could increase through the year as the government seeks to free up more capital that can be used by bigger companies to swallow the underperforming peers.

“You’re going to see more expansion globally,” said Tom Lydon, president of Global Trends Investment in Newport Beach, Calif. “You’ve not seen the IPO levels that we saw a few years ago, but there are great valuations out there. We’re going to see more global expansion and integration of companies, where the expansion tended to be more nationalized than in the past.”

M&A is only one play that has caught the attention of portfolio managers as stocks rallied 7 percent Monday.

While the market drifted lower Tuesday, analysts saw reason for optimism in the limited effects of the retracement. The Dow industrials hovered around breakeven, though the Nasdaq tech barometer slid about 1 percent.

Even those bearish on the market were seeing an upside to the rally.

“A lot of the decline was really caused because there was no confidence in the administration, especially after Geithner got out there and flubbed it on the bank bailout bill,” said Matthew Tuttle, president of Tuttle Wealth Management and an avowed bear for the past several months. “I think the way he handled this (Monday) was perfect, so I think that he either figured it out or he’s really close to figuring it out.”

Opportunities Abound

Taking advantage of the rally, though, could be tricky as volatility is likely to stay in the market for a while.

For Lydon, playing the M&A trend will be easier though exchange-traded funds, rather than picking winners and losers in individual companies. Choosing ETFs that cover the sectors where M&A activity will abound gives investors an opportunity to participate in the trend while reducing the risk of getting burned by individual companies that do bad deals.

Back a few years ago, I was spending much of my sales time in the Call Center dialing prospects and selling them training programs. Typically, we had our scheduled calls to make, which were the prospects that we had already called and left a message stating that we were going to call back at a certain time and day. In addition to the scheduled calls, we also had calls to new clients that had never been contacted before. Usually, we called from a list with a mix of past clients and totally new prospects.

On this particular day, I had performed some quick preliminary research on a new prospect, discovered the name and title of the decision-maker and discovered something about the services that the company provided.

Armed with this knowledge, I made the initial call.

I got the receptionist, sometimes called the gatekeeper. Typically a receptionist will answer with the company name. Sometimes, if you are lucky, they may even give their name, but you can’t count on it.

She didn’t, so I asked her. The call went something like this:

Receptionist: “ABC Company”

Me: “Hi, my name is Larry Prevost and I work with TEM Corp. To whom do I have the pleasure of speaking with today?”

Receptionist: “This is Bobbi.”

Me: “Hi Bobbi. Hey I know they keep you guys pretty busy over there so I don’t want to take up too much of your time today. I’m looking to get a hold of ‘Bob Roberts.’ I understand that he’s the General Manager there. Is that correct?”

Bobbi: “Well, I think so.”

At this point, it would be pretty easy to say something like, “Could you let him know that I’m on the line? I’ll hold — Thanks.”

That’s the usual path. The typical sales rep will have their “pitch” memorized and replaying in their head, cycling round-and-round like clothes in a washing machine’s spin cycle. They will rush through the gatekeeper in an attempt to get to their target and not pay attention to what was just said. If you believe that the game of sales is a game of numbers, then that is what you do.

This statement, however, was just too good to pass up. So I responded a little differently.

Me: “Bobbi, you sound like you’ve worked there for quite a while. And you don’t even know who is leading your company? What’s up with that?

I said it with an obviously playful quality in my voice, but it pulled her attention towards an explanation.

Bobbi: “Well, I’m not really sure of his title yet.

Me: “How do you mean?”

Bobbi: Well, our division was a part of a larger corporation but they were seeing some difficult times. So they are in the process of spinning off our division into a separate entity to be sold off. Bob thinks he can get funding from other sources so that we can remain a separate corporation. He’s trying to get everyone on board for the transition but there’s still a lot of work that needs to be done.

Me: “Like what kind of work, Bobbi?”

Bobbi: “Well, we have several groups where people have been working for a while now, and many of them took their position for granted. Now, Bob needs key people in those groups to be able to present a message to prospective investors. But some of those people are not accustomed to presenting in front of a group and the sales process is something that is foreign to them. You have to realize that some of these people are developers and scientists. They aren’t accustomed to selling their work.”

This conversation went on for another 10 minutes as the receptionist, the gatekeeper that most sales people are in such a hurry to brush off, essentially told me everything that I needed to know about the kinds of problems the company was facing.

Did she have the power to buy? No.

Did she have insight on how this transition was affecting everyone in the company? Most certainly.

So when I got put through to Bob, I could open the call from a point of knowledge and wisdom.

So often, sales people get tied up in the numbers game, being “effective,” and finding the right person to speak with. They want to know the right things to say and how to find the right person to make their pitch to. And in this economy, we tend to get overly preoccupied with getting a list of leads in the appropriate industry so we can cut loose with our preprogrammed script.

However, in the current economy, sameness, lack of originality, and a cookbook responses won’t get you in the door. In order to get your prospect’s attention and open the sales call effectively, you will need to develop several skills:

Listen: We often hear from the experts that sales people need to develop their listening skills. If you keep your ears opened and listen to the conversations that you have with people, you will discover all kinds of information that will help you in identify their true challenges. They will tell you what they are looking for and how you can help them. The challenge her is that most sales people practice selective listening with only a couple of questions in mind filtering the incoming information. Open your mind, open your ears and clarify often. If you need some assistance in keeping your information organized, get your pen and paper out and take notes.

Empathy: You need to be able to see things from your prospect’s perspective. The ability to stand in their shoes and see things from their eyes is priceless. If you can’t see things from their perspective, don’t expect some magic words or phrases to save the day. Gather as much knowledge on your prospect as needed, truly see things from their point of view and you’ll be in a position to effectively sell them what they want and need.

Flexibility: In sales, we have a process to follow. We have our steps to take and our numbers to hit. We need to remember, however, that we are dealing with people, not machines. No matter how much you want to turn them into pieces of the process and make your life simple, you won’t be able to do that. People want to be addressed according to their own needs and they want to be addressed as individuals. Be flexible with your process and remember the goal that you are trying to reach.

Ask Questions: Questions are the sales rep’s most important tool. There are several forms of questions that you can use to gather the information that you need. But you will need to know the type of information you are hunting for before you launch into your questioning strategy. Most sales people forget about asking questions entirely and make the sale about their product and presentation. For those sales reps that do ask questions, they typically do so in a random fashion without really knowing their objective. Use your questions to guide your conversation with the prospect. Use your questions to probe and help the prospect through a logical and emotional process of why your product or service is particularly suited to solving their challenge.

Remember that there is a process to follow in opening your sales call and introducing yourself to your new prospect. But this is a process. Your goal is to get to the next step and most importantly to win your prospect’s respect and trust. Each person that you meet will be different. In making that happen, your process will never quite be the same for any two prospects.

So your best strategy for introducing yourself to a new prospect and opening a call is to gather your information, stay flexible, and use that information to get you to the next stage in the sales process.

IFFINA 2009 Success in Achieving US$ 170 Million During Economic Crisis Jakarta, 15th March 2009.

Berharap sekali dalam industri permebelan tidak ada yang namanya krisis. 170juta USD merupakan angka yang fantastis, perlu crosscheck antara penyelengara dan Asmindo.

Global economic crisis doesn’t have a significant impact on the improvement of Indonesia’s furniture and craft this year. That can be seen from the transaction made in International Furniture and Craft Fair Indonesia (IFFINA) 2009, held on March 11th -15th 2009. During the exhibition, estimated around US$170 million transaction occured. This is an incredible achievement especially when we remember the global crisis that occure around the globe. But the prediction on the estimated of the transaction occured will increase since buyer will visit directly to the furniture industrial central after IFFINA 2009. “The achievement came from 311 exhibition participants, supported by thousands of subcontractor companies, ASMINDO, Dyandra Promosindo Organizer and other associations that work together during the exhibition. The estimated number of transaction will increase since the buyer will visit directly to places where furniture industry centralizes,” said chairman of Indonesian Furniture and Craft Association (ASMINDO), Ambar Tjahyono said in IFFINA 2009 closing day, on Tuesday, March 15th 2009. At least 2000 buyers from 94 countries, such as United States of America, Spain, Netherlands, Australia, Italy, Middle East and Polish, came to the exhibition which was held by ASMINDO working together with Dyandra Promosindo. This exhibition is the biggest exhibition of furniture and craft in Indonesia. Most of the deals were done by buyers from United State of America, Spain, Netherlands, Australia and Middle East. Nowadays, the international market preferred an environmental friendly products. And until today, United State of America is still the biggest market for Indonesian furniture and crafts products, explained Ambar. “We continue to improve our product quality, design and technology and encouraging public forest for the material source thus resulting green product that the international market interested in,” he said. Ambar hoped that after IFFINA 2009, in the next one or two weeks, lots of buyer will do ‘factory visit’ and another real purchase order to the Indonesian furniture and craft in various places will occure. Another positive message also said by the Ministry of Industry, Fahmi Idris, which came to IFFINA on the last day of the exhibition, Sunday, March 15th 2009. Fahmi appearance were as a representative of government support towards IFFINA 2009. When he was walking around the exhibition arena with his family, he actually had a chance to buy some furniture and handycraft from the participant of the exhibitions. “The second IFFINA which was held this year by ASMINDO and supported by other associations were much improve compared to last year. The variety of the furniture, rattan craftsmanship, new product design and technology has showed that there’s a significant improvement,” Fahmi said. “If next year economic condition is much better, then there’ll be more participant, and I hope there are more small industry companies that join the exhibition,” said Fahmi. After that, Dyandra Promosindo Director, Ernst K. Remboen, as the event organizer said, “For a country that affected by the economic crisis, this year IFFINA run smoothly according to what we had hoped and able to achieved our target including the number of participant and buyers that came to the exhibition.” Ernst also hope that they will hold IFFINA 2010, there’s a positive support and pro-active communications between ASMINDO and the government thus creating a positive synergy to make the next exhibition will run smoothly. And with that more participant and buyers come to the exhibition and make Indonesian furniture industry improved.

Today would be crazy day. It is very unussual day in Indonesia Market.

The Dow Jones Index dropped 299.64, or 4.2 percent, to close at 6,763.29. It was the first time the Dow has closed below 7,000 since since May 1997. Auwful.

Stocks had their worst start to March ever, ending at 12-year lows, as another bailout of insurance giant AIG stirred fear about the stability of the financial system.

Yesterday citigroup $1.5, today $ 1.2. tumble 20%. Keep it.

Meskipun pasar turun hancur hancuran, saya masih memperkirakan akhir tahun bisa menarik keuntungan.

Menurut Buffet: I did some dumb thing in investing last year. Mungkin maskudnya sekaranglah waktunya beli.

Rupiah will be around 12.100-12500. 12500 is psikologic level.

Demikian semoga bermanffaat.

Jambi, Indonesia’s tiger catchers have a double job — protecting humans from tigers, and tigers from humans.

The elite teams of rangers and conservationists rush to the scene every time villagers report attacks or sightings of critically endangered Sumatran tigers. First, they calm the people. And then, if there are signs the animal is nearby, they return with steel cage traps, live bait, heat-sensitive cameras and other equipment to capture the magnificent beasts.

This time Sartono, who at 40 has spent nearly half his life in the job, arrives with his six-member squad at a remote oil palm plantation in Sungai Gelam district, 375 miles west of the capital, Jakarta, knowing they’ll have to act fast.

Three people have been killed in less than a week — Rabai Abdul Muthalib, 45, a rubber tapper ambushed near a river, and days later, Suyud, 50, and his son, Imam Mujianto, 21, who were sleeping in their hut when the yellow-eyed tiger pounced through the thin roof. The beast devoured the brain, heart and liver of the youngest victim, spreading terror through surrounding villages.

Sartono knows if he and his team cannot put a quick end to the killing spree, residents will shoot or poison the Sumatran tiger, which is already on the brink of extinction because of rapid deforestation, poaching and clashes with humans.

There are only around 250 of the cats left in the wild, compared to about 1,000 in the 1970s, according to the World Wildlife Fund, meaning the Panthera tigris sumatrae could become the first large predator to go extinct in the 21st century.

The tiger catchers’ job is to trap the animals, carry out health checks, fit them with GPS tracking collars and then release them back into national parks or other protected areas. Often they come back empty-handed, but this time, not long after beginning their intensive foot patrol through palm oil plantations and peatland forest, they have good reason to feel optimistic.

They find and snap photos of fresh paw prints and, together with experts from the Zoological Society of London, start repositioning their traps around the rugged Makin Group’s palm oil plantation. They use a young dog and a goat as bait but place the animals in interior cages to protect them.

Harimau sumatera (Panthera tigris sumatrae) kembali menerkam dua pembalak liar hingga tewas.
